Waterloo Road spoilers follow.

Waterloo Road has cast former Hollyoaks star Hollie-Jay Bowes as part of a storyline for Nicky Walters (Kym Marsh).

The actress, who played Michaela McQueen on the Channel 4 soap between 2006 and 2012, will take on the role of Debs in Waterloo Road.

The story sees Nicky's money problems exacerbate as her family are evicted from their flat, and Nicky, Preston (Noah Valentine) and Tonya (Summer Violet Bird) are mortified that they have to take their belongings to school.

Word gets around about their situation, though Preston is determined to sort their problems and suggests they move in with Kelly-Jo (Alicia Forde) and her mum, Debs, leading Nicky to swallow her pride.

Waterloo Road also recently brought back a former character, with Janeece Bryant (played by fellow Hollyoaks star Chelsee Healey) turning up to Chlo Charles's funeral following the latter's shock death upon the soap's return.

Responding to the devastating Chlo twist, actress Katie Griffiths explained: "It's been hard because there's been a lot of excitement for the show, but I think that was the overriding thing, the excitement for the show coming back because it holds a special place in my heart.

"When I had the initial sit-down meeting with the producers and they told me what would happen, I think the bigger picture was just, isn't it amazing that I get to go back into the character again and work with Adam [Thomas] again and be part of it.

"It is sad that I won't have that again, but I'm just very excited for the show and to see what comes of it."

Waterloo Road airs on Tuesday nights on BBC One. The new series is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
