Waterloo Road returned with a nod to the past - but did you spot it?

Watching the people get lairy...

Waterloo Road spoilers follow.

Waterloo Road brought in the big guns for the opening episode of its reboot on Tuesday night (January 3).

Noticed by various fans on Twitter who tuned in to witness William Beswick High School's pupils mid-protest, a cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' indie banger 'I Predict A Riot' stroked their eardrums as the hectic scene unfolded.

This neat detail was of course a throwback to the original series, which played the very same song in its first-ever episode.

"Oh my god it playing i predict a riot like in the original seasons first episode of #WaterlooRoad so iconic [sic]," tweeted one excited fan.

"I predict a riot playing in the first ep though just like the og show," another tweeted, while a second wrote: "Okay but why did I predict a riot make me cry, such a good nod to series 1."

A few others noticed the nostalgic Easter egg too, with a third person tweeting: "#WaterlooRoad with the Easter egg of 'I Predict A Riot'. Was also played in the first ever episode when Donte was in school!" as another added: "Loved the fact the new series started with 'I Predict A Riot' in the background just like series 1 did." Meanwhile, in the wake of her character Chlo Grainger's shock death in episode 1, Katie Griffiths has admitted it was a difficult one to swallow upon learning her fate.

"It's been hard because there's been a lot of excitement for the show, but I think that was the overriding thing, the excitement for the show coming back because it holds a special place in my heart," she told Manchester Evening News.

"When I had the initial sit-down meeting with the producers and they told me what would happen, I think the bigger picture was just isn't it amazing that I get to go back into the character again and work with Adam [Thomas] again and be part of it."

Griffiths added she was sad she won't get to be a part of the new episodes going forward, but noted: "I'm just very excited for the show and to see what comes of it."

Waterloo Road airs on Tuesday nights on BBC One. The new series is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
