Waterloo Road star Katie Griffiths has addressed that devastating twist in the show's first episode back.

The BBC school drama returned to our screens for the first time since 2015 last night (January 3), with Adam Thomas and Katie reprising their roles as beloved Waterloo Road couple Donte and Chlo.

The premiere episode gave fans a glimpse into Donte and Chlo's happy marriage as the proud parents of Izzy and Tommy (played by Adam's real-life niece and son),

However, their happiness was short-lived when Chlo got into an accident at the school, which later resulted in her sudden and tragic death.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News about her character's shock departure, Katie admitted that it was hard knowing she would only be back for one episode.

"It's been hard because there's been a lot of excitement for the show, but I think that was the overriding thing, the excitement for the show coming back because it holds a special place in my heart," she explained.

"When I had the initial sit down meeting with the producers and they told me what would happen, I think the bigger picture was just isn't it amazing that I get to go back into the character again and work with Adam again and be part of it.

"It is sad that I won't have that again, but I'm just very excited for the show and to see what comes of it."

Opening up about what it was like working with the Thomas family, the actress said: "It's been amazing working with the Thomas'. They are all so lovely.

"Clearly they are a very close family and I think what that does is make the scenes and the show even better because you see a real family dynamic.

"Teddy [who plays Tommy] and Scarlett [Izzy] are absolutely fantastic and they are going to kill it, it's just really lovely that they're a part of it. I can't think of anyone else who this has actually happened to."

Waterloo Road airs on Tuesday nights on BBC One. The new series is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
