Waterloo Road star Adam Thomas has responded to the big twist in the reboot's big return episode.

Fans were left devastated by the turn of events, which started with Chlo Charles (Katie Griffiths) collapsing after being injured in a school protest. After being rushed to hospital, husband Donte (Adam) was given the tragic news that she had passed away.

Recalling reading the twist, Adam told the Daily Star: "When Cameron [Roach] first approached us about the show and the storyline of what's going to happen, I was like 'What?! The first episode?!'

"It's a bit like Game of Thrones when Sean Bean's character dies. It's like 'how can they do that?', but there's also that shock factor as well. I think the audience will not see it coming.

"The fact that she gets ran over and carries on as well and then at the end, it was hard to play, it was quite emotional."

Speaking further about working with real-life niece Scarlett and son Teddy on the scenes, Adam continued: "I was there with Scarlett and Teddy, it was just an emotional scene to do, they were crying, it's not something you want your kids or little niece to go through.

"But they know that it was all part of the gig, we loved every minute of it – it was just a storyline that nobody ever saw coming."

Katie added that the two were "pros", before Adam further reflected on the show's return in 2022, saying: "When Waterloo Road was back many years ago, I don't think social media [was] as big as it is now.

"I feel like not many shows on television are as relatable as Waterloo Road is.

"Not only the characters in the show but also the topics that they discuss, the storylines throughout each and every single episode of Waterloo Road – someone will be able to relate.

"I think it's important to have shows like that for kids to discuss topics that we talk about in Waterloo Road – I think we need shows, a show from Manchester."

Waterloo Road airs on Tuesday nights on BBC One. The new series is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
