Mescal, who got his break along with Daisy Edgar-Jones thanks to Normal People, reprises his role of Stanley, while the rest step back into the shoes of Blanche, Stella and Mitch.

"On a street in New Orleans, in the blistering summer heat, a sister spirals," reads a synopsis.

"When Blanche unexpectedly visits her estranged sister Stella, she brings with her a past that will threaten their future. As Stella's husband Stanley stalks closer to the truth, Blanche's fragile world begins to fracture. Reality and illusion collide and a violent conflict changes their lives forever."

Discussing the project, the Irish performer shared in a statement: "I'm incredibly excited that Streetcar is being transferred to the West End with this formidable cast and creative team, led by the exceptionally talented Rebecca Frecknall.

"It's my favourite play and it's wonderful to be able to share it with a wider audience."

This revival of Streetcar arrives exactly one week after Mescal's visit to the Oscars in Los Angeles, where his performance in Aftersun (just his second feature-film) competes in the Best Actor category against Colin Farrell (for The Banshees of Inisherin) and Austin Butler (Elvis) amongst others.

"This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I'm so utterly grateful," he said after this year's nominations were announced.

"I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte [Wells] and Frankie [Corio] who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"
