The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases new trailer and collector's edition for pre-order

The latest Nintendo Direct had more than you could shake a Deku Stick at.

Nintendo has unveiled a brand-new look at The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, ahead of its release in May. The company also announced a collector's edition available for pre-order.

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch sequel to Breath of the Wild hasn't had an update in a while, but today's (February 8) Nintendo Direct gave us a fresh trailer.

In the new Tears of the Kingdom footage, we see the forces of evil lay waste to Hyrule, while Link skates and glides around, fights giant rock monsters and uses various mechanical contraptions (which players can assemble) to get around.

We also hear the voice of Zelda, who worries that Link may not be strong enough to stop this threat and prays for the power to fight back.

Between that and all the fearsome monsters, this is tonally looking like the darkest Legend of Zelda game we've had since Majora's Mask.

Thankfully, the game's release date hasn't moved. Tears of the Kingdom will still release on May 12.

Nintendo also announced a physical collector's edition of the upcoming game, fit with a SteelBook case, a book of official artwork, a poster and what look like small pins or badges.

Pre-orders are due to live imminently, but at the time of writing, the Nintendo UK site isn't loading due to high traffic.

Elsewhere in this jam-packed direct, we got details on the Splatoon 3 Expansion Pass, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe DLC, a Switch version of fan-favourite Nintendo DS game Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, and a new Professor Layton game.

The direct also dished up info on remasters for We Love Katamari and Metroid Prime and a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 expansion that brings back Shulk, Rex and Alvis from the previous games.

Plus, we heard about new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe content, Game Boy games for Nintendo Switch Online with Game Boy Advance games for the Expansion Pack tier, and a July 21 release date for Pikmin 4 – to name just a few announcements.
