The wait is over for the highly-anticipated The Last of Us TV series as it has finally arrived on our screens, with the post-apocalyptic drama now airing in the US and the UK.

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed and follows Joel, a hardened survivor who is hired to escort 14-year-old girl Ellie across a dangerous, dystopian United States.

Based on the critically acclaimed video game from developers Naughty Dog released in 2013, The Last of Us stars The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie respectively.

The Last of Us will have a total of nine episodes, the first episode premiered on HBO and HBO Max in the US on Sunday, January 15 at 9pm ET – it aired simultaneously in the UK at the same time on Sky Atlantic in the early hours on Monday, January 16 at 2am GMT.

How to watch The Last of Us in the UK

The Last of Us airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK with new episodes airing weekly at 2am on Mondays. New episodes become available to watch on demand on Sky and streaming service NOW after they have aired.

The Last of Us airs on HBO on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT with new episodes releasing weekly.

It's also available to stream in 4K on the HBO Max streaming service.

    Starring alongside Pascal and Ramsey are Gabriel Luna (True Detective) as Joel’s younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge (The Flight Attendant) as resistance leader Marlene and Anna Torv (Mindhunter) as smuggler Tess.

    The series will also star Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) as Frank and Bill and Storm Reid (Euphoria) as Riley, with special appearances from original Joel and Ellie voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.

    The Last of Us TV series is created by original video game creator Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, who is best known for creating HBO's five-part Chernobyl miniseries.

    Reviews for the The Last of Us have been really positive, with the show currently having a 97% Fresh rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes – the series received high praise in our review, calling The Last of Us an early contender for best show of the year.
