Why Avengers: Endgame left Hulk permanently damaged

Don't mess with those Stones.

One of the lingering fan questions from Avengers: Endgame is why exactly Hulk's arm was left permanently damaged by the Infinity Gauntlet… despite him, you know, having healing powers?

Bruce Banner's green alter ego famously has regenerative healing powers. But they didn't seem to be much use after he wielded the Infinity Stones, as his arm was left forever scarred.

Well, Endgame directors the Russo brothers have explained just why the powers didn't work, admitting that the power of the Stones was just too great.

"The Hulk has never come up against every Infinity Stone in a Gauntlet and the pure power of those Stones," Joe Russo told Wired.

"And Thanos is nearly invincible and he didn't heal either. So clearly when you wield the full power of the Infinity Stones, it's irreparable damage to your being."

Anthony Russo added: "If it doesn't even kill you."

So there you have it.

Meanwhile, the directors have revealed that a scene with Smart Hulk was a logistical nightmare to film, mainly because it involved a cameo from their kids and was difficult to work around their school schedules.

"The hardest one was a scene in the movie where it's the scene in the diner where we introduced Smart Hulk the first time," Anthony said.

"So, he's sitting there with Ant-Man, Black Widow and Captain America, and there's these three kids that walk in who are fans of Hulk. They want a picture with him. And those three kids are, one is my son Julian. One is my brother's daughter, Lia. One is my sister's son, Augie."

Avengers: Endgame is out on digital download now and on physical release on September 2, available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K now.
