Luther is coming back in a new movie on Netflix, which will pick up from the shocking events of the TV show finale that saw him arrested.
A movie had been spoken about for a while by creator Neil Cross, but it took until September 2021 for it to be officially confirmed. It's been filmed and it will be heading our way in March.
It appears that we won't ever be getting a season six of the show, so at least we'll be seeing Luther hunt down another serial killer in Luther: The Fallen Sun. And, who knows, maybe this is just the first feature-length adventure for the detective?
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves though. Here's everything you need to know about the Luther movie on Netflix.
Luther movie release date: When can we expect Luther The Fallen Sun?
Luther: The Fallen Sun has been confirmed to be released in cinemas on February 24 and on Netflix on March 10.
Filming took place from November 2021 to April 2022 and while the series stayed in London, the movie filmed in London and in Belgium.
Luther movie cast: Who's coming back for Luther The Fallen Sun?
Idris Elba will, of course, be back as troubled detective John Luther and he'll be joined by Dermot Crowley as his former boss DSU Martin Schenk.
We say former as we assume Luther is no longer employed, but maybe events of the movie will change that.
Newcomers include Cynthia Erivo (who is said to play Luther's nemesis), Jess Liaudin, Lauryn Ajufo and Natasha Patel. Most excitingly, Andy Serkis is playing the movie's villain David Robey – and we can expect a Luther killer as dark as ever.
"When I first read the script, I almost wanted to throw it in the bin and have a shower," Serkis of the role.
There's no word yet on whether any of the other Luther cast members have returned for the movie, such as Paul McGann as Mark North, the former lover of Luther's dead ex-wife Zoe, or Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan.
In the TV series finale, Alice seemingly fell to her death, but then her body was nowhere to be found, suggesting that she could be due another return from the dead.
Behind the scenes, the movie has been written by series creator Neil Cross and was directed by Jamie Payne, who directed the final series on BBC One.
Luther movie plot: What is Luther The Fallen Sun about?
At the end of season five, Luther was led away in handcuffs by the police.
There was a lot of confusion among fans as to what the charges levelled against him actually were, but one thing was for certain: Luther's future was in serious jeopardy.
The movie will pick up with Luther behind bars for his crimes, but when another gruesome serial killer terrorises London and starts to taunt Luther, he decides to break out of prison to do what he does best: catch a killer.
We doubt Luther is the kind of guy who would happily go back to prison after he (presumably) saves the day, especially as Elba has said that the new movie could be just the beginning.
"It's not a competition, but I reference Bond as a template for the type of film we're going for," he explained. "John is a leading character in a film that he's the hero of. That's the comparison I'm making. Some films do them well – Bond is one of them.
"But my ambition for it is to have that sort of scale, that reverence. I want people to be like, 'Ooh! Luther, the first film? Wicked'. And to continue that. And then maybe later down the line, when I'm too old, someone else will step in to play John."
Somebody else as John Luther? Say it ain't so.
And if you're worried that the new movie taking Luther out of London will change matters, Elba has promised that even though the scale might be bigger, you can still expect the usual Luther scares.
