It's easy to get used to being a couple of feet away from a power cable or wireless charging pad on those days when you're working from home. But, whether you're in the office a few days a week, simply left your handset off the charger overnight, or you're jetting off on for a weekend getaway, you'll soon find that your phone battery can drain far more than you expect when you're out and about. That's especially true if you're swiping through videos on TikTok, watching Netflix downloads, or using Google Maps to navigate.

Even if you're not off on a holiday and have just found your phone is faltering after a long day at the office or need to keep your Nintendo Switch fully topped up to fit in more Animal Crossing, one of the best power banks is an absolute must.

Our best power bank picks below are a combination of our hands-on testing and expert recommendations from our rigorous research.

How Digital Spy tests portable chargers

We tried out the best portable chargers by charging up a range of phones (including Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and iPhone models) and timing how long they took to recharge. We assessed the design, portability and convenience of the models too. There are loads of portable chargers on the market, so we focused on some of the most trusted brands for our picks – there’s a reason there are several Anker models here, they’re super reliable and offered at a range of capacities and prices.

      Size and capacity

Small power banks: Looking at entry-level low-capacity power banks? These are ideal for a quick top-up to get your phone through to the end of the day. We'd recommend avoiding anything below 5,000mAh, though, as they'll barely recharge today's smartphones. Look for between 5,000 and 10,000mAh. These usually cost between £10 to £40 (although they can go for more, depending on features), can be as small as a chocolate bar and 5,000mAh is enough for nearly a full extra charge on most phones.

Mid-range power banks: Many of the best power banks come with a mid-range capacity, as it's a great balance between portability and convenience. If you pick something with a 10,000mAh battery, expect it to be a bit heftier than the small options (it could be about the same size as your phone) but not so heavy that you'd think twice about throwing one in your bag. These also potentially include fast charging capability and extra ports (more on those below).

High-capacity power banks: When you're after a power bank for a camping trip or weekend getaway, or to power your Switch or laptop, you'll want something with a higher capacity. Anything with 20,000mAh or above will charge your phone multiple times, and many can charge several devices at the same time. As such, they're usually larger, weightier and can be more expensive.

      Wireless charging

If you're prone to forgetting your cable, some power banks can recharge your phone wirelessly. You'll just need to place the smartphone on the charger and press a button to start – you may have to reposition it to get perfect alignment, although there are magnetic models (more on those below) for the latest iPhones that'll always snap into the correct position.

      Magnetic power banks

If you've got one of Apple's iPhone 12, 13 or 14 models, there's a new breed of portable charger on the market. Models from Anker, Belkin and Mophie now come with magnets to connect wirelessly to the back of newer iPhones, charging them at a standard 7.5W. They're not fast, but they're arguably some of the most convenient models, and we've included a few favourites in our list.

Are you still using older cables? Your phone will be charging slower than the fast-charge systems available, and the difference can be drastic. If it usually takes an hour to reach 50% charge, a fast charger could get you there in just over 20 minutes. Many Androids and iPhones are capable of quick charging (iPhone 8 onwards, for example), but you may need a new USB-C cable or Lightning-to-USB-C cable to get these speeds. Power banks are capable of this too, but you'll need to look for ones with "PD" (aka Power Delivery), as that will give you quick charging.
