The Snow Girl's twisty ending explained — What happened to Amaya?

And what does that final reveal mean for Miren?

The Snow Girl spoilers follow.

Netflix's The Snow Girl (La chica de nieve) follows a young journalist named Miren who's obsessed with the mystery surrounding a missing girl — yep, "snow girl" — who went missing in Malaga many years earlier.

Based on Javier Castillo's novel of the same name, this six-part Spanish series is the kind of mystery that really makes you pray the Netflix gods chill out and stop cancelling shows, because the finale ends with some big questions that can't be left unanswered.

But before we get ahead of ourselves and start thinking about season two, we first need to dive into how The Snow Girl's first head-scratching season came to an end. Prepare yourself for time jumps aplenty as we explain everything you need to know about the final episode – and that big reveal.

Nine years: that's how long Miren's been trying to figure out what happened to Amaya after she was abducted in 2010. And finally, she's reached a breakthrough with the help of a VHS repairman. Yep, we didn't know they existed either.

Using his accounts book, Miren discovers that the videos made of Amaya were filmed by a woman named Iris who lives alone in the hills — or so we thought. After Amaya's real mother, a fertility doctor, told Iris that she couldn't have children, she chose to steal Amaya for herself.

Because Amaya was only five when she was abducted, Iris has successfully brainwashed the child into believing that outsiders are not to be trusted. So when Miren visits Iris, a now 14-year-old Amaya hides her presence in the house. This is just as well for Miren really, because a guy from the bank snuffed it when he found out Iris' awful secret a little while earlier.

Miren survives the visit because she fails to discover Amaya's whereabouts, but Iris is still freaked out because it means she's very close to being found out. And so Iris does what any kidnapper would do and escapes with her so-called "daughter" in the middle of the night. Except Miren spots them and realises that the headband she sees in the car is the same one that Amaya wore in one of the most recent videos.

Iris then does what any unhinged kidnapper would do and decides to drive herself and Amaya both off a cliff together. It seems that Iris would rather die than be separated from her captive/"child". And that's exactly what happens, to Iris at least. She dies immediately in the crash, but Amaya survives because she's made of pretty sturdy stuff, it seems.

With Miren arriving on the scene, Amaya freaks out and aims a gun at her. After all this, she's still willing to defend her "mum" to the end. A brief fight ensues, and then Miren secures her long enough for the emergency services to come and sort everything out.

After nine long years apart, Amaya's parents are finally reunited with their daughter thanks to Miren. Álvaro and Ana don't get the happy ending they want or deserve though, at least, not at first, because Amaya is still traumatised from the kidnap and the deaths of her fake parents. Surprisingly enough, she's actually mad at her real parents because their search is what resulted in Iris's death. Kids these days, honestly.

At least Amaya lets Álvaro and Ana watch cartoons with her at the end. That should give them hope that their daughter might not be lost to them forever, even if the countless therapy bills end up making them homeless.

That's not the only case that Miren's been obsessed with. Before Amaya's rescue, Miren herself was considered a person of interest by the police after a caravan fire killed two men named Luque and Foster.

Earlier on, Luque posted footage of Miren's sexual assault on a dark web page where people paid thousands of euros to see the awful things that happened to her. Foster also upset Miren previously when he admitted to watching the attack and even worse, he only agreed to help her with the case if she posed for some lurid photos.

And that's why Miren became a prime suspect in their deaths, because the police found one of these photos in the caravan fire. However, there isn't enough evidence to pin any of this on Miren, so she gets away with it.

With all that behind her, Miren writes a book about Amaya's disappearance and the case that followed. Money might start to pour in soon, but a happy ending isn't on the cards, not yet at least.

And that's because two years after the case is solved, Miren is handed an envelope that looks a lot like the ones that Iris used to post. This time though, there's no video of Amaya inside. Instead, there's a photo of another, unknown woman who has been tied up against her will, just like Amaya was.

There's also a chilling message written on the envelope that reads: "Want to play?"

The episode ends with this big twist, suggesting that a second season is certainly a possibility for everyone involved. But who is this new victim? Who sent the photo? And what does all this have to do with Miren?

If Netflix cancels The Snow Girl (like they have so many other shows recently), answers can still be found in Javier Castillo's follow-up book, titled El juego del alma. There, Miren investigates the crucifixion of a 15-year-old girl in New York whose case may or may not be connected to the identity of the woman seen in this new polaroid...

The Snow Girl is now available to stream on Netflix.
