Happy Valley spoilers follow – including for the series finale.

Happy Valley star Rhys Connah has said he "would absolutely" revisit the series if creator Sally Wainwright proposed a new story.

Last weekend's season 3 finale was billed as the crime drama's parting episode, and it didn't disappoint, as dogged police sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) came face-to-face with twisted fugitive Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in her kitchen.

After realising that Catherine had provided his son Ryan (played by Connah) with a loving family while he was unaware of his existence, Tommy decided not to kill her.

Catherine later learned that Tommy had died of his injuries in hospital, after setting himself on fire.

Earlier this week, Connah stopped by Good Morning Britain to discuss the future of his character, who struck a relationship with his imprisoned dad during Happy Valley's final series.

"If Sally asked me to do pretty much any role again, I would be completely up for it," he said.

He added: "Let me just make it clear, I don't want anything out of context: there are no plans for season 4. As of now, Sally is completely happy with how she's left the series."

Connah added that he likes the idea of catching up with Ryan several years from now.

"If in seven years Sally came to me and said: 'Do you want to play Ryan seven years on when he's a police officer?' If he's an inspector or something... I would absolutely do that without a heartbeat," he admitted.

"I would go for it."

Happy Valley seasons 1-3 are available on BBC iPlayer.
