If you're looking for something to make you feel like you're in a far away land on a grand adventure – and have a Netflix subscription – these 13 movies are the ones to watch. From hard-hitting dramas to family-friendly affairs, Netflix has a host of adventure movies in which you to indulge your imagination.
Da 5 Bloods
Though it feels reductive to call Spike Lee's Vietnam war epic an adventure film, the driving mechanism of the plot is a search for treasure. Of course, Da 5 Bloods is about much more than that.
Wild
Based on the memoirs (which are better, by the by) of Cheryl Strayed, Wild follows the recently divorced woman (Reese Witherspoon) who decides to start a new life by hiking along the 1,100 mile-long Pacific Crest Trail. She begins to discover herself as she goes along her trek.
Okja
From Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, Okja follows young Mija who has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja — a massive pig-like animal and an even bigger friend — at her home in the mountains of South Korea.
But that changes when family-owned, multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja for themselves and transports her to New York, where an image-obsessed and self-promoting CEO has big plans for Mija's dearest friend. With no particular plan but single-minded in intent, Mija sets out on a rescue mission.
Everest
The 2015 film is based on the true story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster when, on the morning of May 10, climbers from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.
With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man. Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.
Hold The Dark
Starring Westworld's Jeffrey Wright, Hold The Dark follows a wolf expert named Russell Core who is summoned to a remote Alaskan village to search for the wolves that killed three children. But he soon finds himself unravelling a harrowing mystery.
Missing Link
Laika's latest film, Missing Link introduces the fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), who teams up with the eight-foot, furry recluse Mr Link to help him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La.
Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, the trio encounter their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world. Through it all, they learn that sometimes one can find a family in the places one least expects.
Jurassic World
You'll be familiar with the plot of Jurassic World, which reinvigorated Spielberg's franchise. A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.
Spirited Away
Spirited Away (our favourite Studio Ghibli film) follows 10-year-old Chihiro Ogino who accidentally enters the spirit world of Kami. After her parents are turned into pigs by a witch, Chihiro takes a job working in her bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.
Howl's Moving Castle
Another Ghibli favourite, Howl's Moving Castle follows Sophie who's uneventful life at her late father's hat shop changes when she befriends wizard Howl, who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.
The NeverEnding Story
To escape from his dull life and bullies at school, Bastian takes refuge in an old book store. There he begins reading an old storybook and finds himself drawn into the mythical world of Fantasia. Everyone sing along! Neverending stoooryyyyyy...
Labyrinth
The Jim Henson classic revolves around 16-year-old Sarah's quest to reach the centre of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, whom Sarah wished away to Jareth the Goblin King. It's getting a sequel (or a spin-off?) in the near future and we're excited.
Hook
When Peter Pan's children are abducted by Captain Hook, he is forced to return to Neverland. With some help from Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys, he must battle against his old foe to save his kids. Robin Williams plays Peter, while Dustin Hoffman takes the role of Captain Hook.
Captain Fantastic
Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen), his wife Leslie and their six children live deep in the wilderness of Washington state. Isolated from society, Ben and Leslie devote their existence to raising their kids – educating them to think critically, training them to be physically fit and athletic, guiding them in the wild without technology and demonstrating the beauty of co-existing with nature.
When Leslie dies suddenly, Ben must take his sheltered offspring into the outside world for the first time.
