Netflix's movie library is a near-bottomless ocean of films, ever ebbing and flowing (ie adding and removing titles). If you want to keep up with what's new on Netflix we keep our feature updated every Friday.

But what about what's good on Netflix? We've trawled (and we mean properly trawled) their catalogue and picked out some of the best Netflix UK movies, so you can have a quick peruse and find something to your taste to watch right now.

Dunkirk

From Christopher Nolan, this film tells the story of rescuing Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance co-star, with longtime Nolan collaborator Hans Zimmer providing the score. It's claustrophobic and tense, heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time.

Annihilation

From Alex Garland, of Dev's and Ex Machina, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman as Lena, a biologist and former soldier who joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband (played by Oscar Isaac) on his mission into the mysterious Area X. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity. It's mind-bendy and if you need the ending explained, head this way.

From Oscar winner Bong Joon-Ho, Okja managed to hide some commentary about Bong's battle with Weinstein over his previous film, Snowpiercer. In real life, Bong was dragged to Paramus, New Jersey, where a test audience slated Weinstein's cut of Snowpiercer. Okja sees Mija's titular pet super-pig Okja brought to a slaughterhouse – in Paramus.

After being burglarised, a depressed woman (Melanie Lynskey) and her obnoxious neighbour (Elijah Wood) set out to find the thieves, but they soon find themselves against a group of dangerous criminals. Hilarious, quirky (but not annoyingly so), we love it.

Looper

Before he became famous/infamous for working on Star Wars, Rian Johnson made the excellent and surprisingly not too confusing time-travel thriller starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Bruce Willis. Joe, a time travelling mob hitman called a looper, finds himself to be the victim of his own actions. Future meets present. Dun dun dun!

The Cabin in the Woods

A meta-comedy-horror of epic proportions, The Cabin in the Woods follows five college friends (Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams) who arrive at a remote forest cabin for a little vacation. Little do they expect the horrors that await them, falling victim to backwoods zombies. But there is another factor at play... two scientists (Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford) are manipulating the ghoulish goings-on, but even as the body count rises, there is yet more at work than meets the eye.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay (When They See Us) explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation's prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

Three Identical Strangers

Channel 4

This documentary tells the story of identical triplets separated at birth as part of a secret psychological study into nature vs. nurture. Yes, it's as unbelievable as it sounds, but it's all true.

I, Tonya

Margot Robbie plays Tonya Harding in the film loosely based around the actual events of 1994 in which Tonya's competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, was kneecapped. The movie depicts Harding as a victim, reframing the narrative around her implication in the crime as well as other criticism of her actions.

Spirited Away

Studio Ghibli

We cannot champion this movie enough. One of Studio Ghibli's best, Spirited Away follows 10-year-old Chihiro and her parents who stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku, who explains the park is for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm, and that she must work to free herself and her parents.

The Big Short

Universal

A darkly comedic take on the 2007-2008 financial crisis, The Big Short follows different people affected by, or profiting from, the instability in the US housing market. The epic cast includes Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, with Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong, Finn Wittrock and Marisa Tomei.

The Half of It

Set in a David Lynch-ian small American Town, The Half of It is half rom-com, half drama that takes the classic Cyrano de Bergerac love triangle and turns it on its head. A queer love story we love to love!

A Simple Favour

Lionsgate

An irresistible mystery thriller A Simple Favour is playful where Gone Girl was cynical, which makes sense when you realise it was helmed by Ghostbusters and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig. It's a darkly funny and breezy romp that revels in its increasingly twisted reveals.

Abducted in Plain Sight

Netflix

The seemingly absurd, but disturbingly true story of the Broberg family who, against the backdrop of the '70s, were manipulated and ultimately plagued by their trusted neighbour and friend Robert 'B' Berchtold. Unbeknownst to them – at least at first – he had been grooming one of the daughters, 12-year-old Jan.

Performer Rudy Ray Moore develops an outrageous character named Dolemite, who becomes an underground sensation and star of a kung-fu, anti-establisment film that could make or break Moore. Starring Eddie Murphy, it has been lauded by critics.

There you have it, some of the best movies Netflix has to offer.
