Fear the Walking Dead season 8 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

The zombie spin-off will be back.

Good news, Fear the Walking Dead fans... AMC's horror spin-off has officially been renewed for an eighth season.

Deadline announced the news back in December, and now that the explosive season seven finale has aired, we're already anticipating what will happen next.

Here's everything you need to know about Fear the Walking Dead season eight.

The show's format has shifted in recent years, with seasons now being split into two parts.

Since then, the first part has always aired in the autumn, while part two returns in the spring. So if the production pattern holds, it's likely that season eight will follow suit.

This means we're likely to see season eight in autumn 2022 while part two can be expected to drop sometime in spring 2023.

Fear the Walking Dead season 8 cast: Who will be in it?

In season seven's penultimate episode, Fear the Walking Dead fans said goodbye to one of its longest-serving cast members, Alycia Debnam-Carey, who has been playing the character Alicia since the show started back in 2015.

The episode saw Alicia spend a large part of it fighting a fever that she was convinced was the infection from her amputated bite taking over.

However, she made a full recovery and made amends with Victor (Colman Domingo) before setting off on a new mission on her own by the end of the episode.

Although the fact Alicia is still alive left fans feeling hopeful for her return in the future, Debnam-Carey confirmed that it was her final episode in an Instagram post.

The actress wrote: "To my dearest @feartwd family, tonight marks the end of an extraordinary and life changing journey of playing Alicia Clark...

"I was 21 when we began this crazy journey but now at 28, after 7 years and 100 episodes, I decided it was time for me to move on as an actor and as a person. As is the nature of our jobs I needed to seek out new challenges, new opportunities and carve out a new chapter for myself."

Meanwhile, Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) made a comeback in season seven after her original off-screen death occurred during the fourth season, when she sacrificed herself at the stadium to allow the others to escape during a zombie attack led by the Vultures.

Dickens has also been confirmed to return as a series regular in season eight.

Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead universe's chief content officer, said (via Entertainment Weekly): "If there were a Mount Deadmore, Kim Dickens' face would be on it. Madison Clark is a foundational character to TWDU – heroic, complex, an every person who becomes a warrior and then a force of benevolence.

"Kim Dickens' raw talent, strength, and brilliance will electrify TWDU once more and we couldn't be luckier to have her back."

Other characters who are also likely to return in season eight are Colman Domingo's Victor Strand, Austin Amelio's Dwight, Danay Garcia's Luciana, Jenna Elfman's June, Rubén Blades' Daniel, Karen David's Grace, and Mo Collins' Sarah.

The season seven finale ended with Morgan's raft landing in Louisiana, where a seafood sign confirmed that PADRE does exist – though their exact location is unknown.

Morgan and (an apparently alive) Madison are driven towards a large boat at sea in the final moments, implying that the PADRE base is possibly nearby.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg confirmed that the finale sets up season eight for one of the "one of the biggest reinventions [they've] ever done".

The past four seasons have been set in Texas, whereas Chambliss revealed that season eight will "actually be moving the show to Savannah, Georgia, which is on the water".

He continued: "And we end the season with Morgan and Madison going out to a boat. So I think it's safe to say that season 8 will have a very different environment from what we have seen before. And it will, in many ways, be centred around the water."

Goldberg went on to reveal some more details about the upcoming season, as well as confirming that we'll be learning more about the mysterious PADRE.

"In [season 7 episode 16], Madison is in a mirrored room speaking to someone on the other side of a mirror. We will find out who that person is on the other side of the mirror," he began. "And the other thing I could just say in conjunction with moving to Savannah, we always talk about doing reinventions on the show every season.

"This will be one of the biggest reinventions we've done. We'll be introducing PADRE, and kind of seeing that for what it is, removing the location. But the circumstances in which we find the characters is, we hope, going to be very surprising for everyone. It's a big change."
