Will there be an Encanto 2?

After all, everybody is now talking about Bruno.

Encanto 2 is still just a dream to fans of the first film. Despite garnering an Oscar win, there has yet to be any rumblings of a sequel to the lauded Disney film despite former Disney boss Bob Chapek referring to Encanto as a "franchise" during an earnings call in February 2022.

The movie's breakout song 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' became a record-breaker in both the UK and US, while the other songs from the movie's soundtrack have all broken in the top ten worldwide. This resulted in a fan-fervour for the film that hasn't truly been since since Frozen.

However, there isn't anything overtly obvious in Encanto to warrant a follow up movie. Then again, there are a lot of films (like the aforementioned Frozen) that don't have explicit cliffhangers and still wind up with sequels.

At the time of writing, Disney still has not confirmed a sequel to Encanto. The more time passes, the less likely it feels. That being said, it took almost 10 years for Frozen 2 to come around, so you can't truly rule out the possibility of an Encanto 2.

If it were to happen, what could it be about? Well, here's everything you need to know about a potential Encanto 2.

Encanto ending explained: Does it set up Encanto 2?

The first movie sees Mirabel attempt to save the family's magical home, the Casita, after it starts to crack and the candle begins to flicker.

After the Casita is destroyed and the candle dies, Mirabel flees as she thinks it's all her fault. However, after reconciling with Abuela, the Madrigals are reunited and work together with the community to rebuild the Casita. Mirabel is given a doorknob to place in the front door and when she does, the magic comes back for everyone.

Well, except Mirabel still doesn't have a power, technically, but she's pretty special all the same. There are plenty of theories out there about why she wasn't given a power if you want to dig into them.

For Stephanie Beatriz, the fact that Mirabel doesn't have a power is missing the point. "If you really do a close listen to those lyrics, oftentimes it's just right there," she told Digital Spy.

"The miracle is you – all of you, all of you. That line gets repeated a couple of times. And that line could be read a couple of different ways, right? All of you – pointing to a group of people. The miracle is all of you guys, right?

"And the miracle is also all of you – all of who you are; all the parts of you is the miracle. There's no one alive that's ever been just like you, and there won't be again."

Great, now we're crying again.

As we mentioned above, Encanto's ending doesn't really set up a sequel directly as it's a self-contained story. That doesn't mean there aren't potential new angles to explore in the sequel though.

One fan theory has Mirabel taking over from Abuela as the Casita's matriarch and that's why she didn't get a power, potentially leading the family out from the community and into the wider world again.

We'd be happy to watch any future adventures of the family Madrigal, so the sequel could go anywhere. Jessica Darrow, who voices Luisa, has her own thoughts on what could happen next.

"I want Luisa to take a break. I really want the humanisation of Luisa, you know, we saw all of the hard stuff that she has to deal with and the anxieties that she experiences," she told Buzzfeed.

"I want to see a day where she does get to experience joy and relaxation and simple pleasure. And I also want to see her hang out with the unicorn donkey a little more. And [for] the donkeys to talk. That'd be cool."

It could also be that we don't see an Encanto 2, but a spin-off TV series on Disney+ instead that follows different members of the family.

"I think with this movie especially we fell in love with every single character, and I think that we try to design them in a way that you want to know more about them," director Jared Bush told The Digital Fix.

"So I would very, very happily see a show about any member of that family."

Co-director Charise Castro-Smith added: "I can tell you that Lin-Manuel Miranda really wants a show about Dolores."

Encanto 2 release date: When could we expect Encanto 2?

As mentioned, Disney hasn't confirmed Encanto 2, so it won't be a surprise to know there isn't a confirmed release date yet.

The first movie was in development for a few years before being officially confirmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in June 2020. It arrived in cinemas in November 2021, but we can expect a few years' wait for a sequel (if it happens).

There were six years between Frozen and Frozen II, so that could suggest a long wait for Encanto 2. Hopefully it wouldn't be that long, but until it's confirmed, it's impossible to say when it will be released.

Encanto 2 cast: Who's coming back for Encanto 2?

We'd expect to see the entire main cast back for a potential sequel, which would again likely be led by Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel.

She'll be joined by the likes of John Leguizamo as Bruno, Jessica Darrow as Luisa, Diane Guerrero as Isabela, María Cecilia Botero as Abuela, Mauro Castillo as Félix, Angie Cepeda as Julieta and Wilmer Valderrama as Agustín.
