Gemma Arterton reveals regret about her Quantum of Solace role

"As I got older I realised there was so much wrong with Bond women."

Gemma Arterton has expressed her regret over her Bond girl role in Quantum of Solace.

The actress, who played Strawberry Fields in the 2008 film, has previously spoken of her "enormous gratitude" for the part and how it opened many doors for her career, but she now thinks she should have turned it down.

"I still get criticism for accepting Quantum of Solace, but I was 21, I had a student loan, and you, know, it was a Bond film," she told The Sun.

"But as I got older I realised there was so much wrong with Bond women. Strawberry should have just said no, really, and worn flat shoes."

Earlier this year, Arterton told The Telegraph that she now wouldn't choose a role like Strawberry.

"You know, I haven't seen it for about 15 years either, so I can't really remember what's in it or what I did, but I know I wouldn't choose a role like that now. Because she was funny and she was sweet, but she didn't really have anything to do – or a backstory."

In more recent years, Arterton has focused on creating female-led content with her own production company, as well as pushing for equality for women in the entertainment industry.

A far cry from her James Bond role, the actress is next set to appear as a nun in the BBC One drama Black Narcissus, a three-part miniseries about a 1930s religious group who attempt to establish a women's mission in an abandoned palace in the Tibetan Himalayas, only for its haunting mysteries to awaken their forbidden desires.

She'll also appear in the Kingsman spin-off The King's Man, having previously stated she was impressed with director Matthew Vaughn's intention to create "strong female characters".

No Time to Die, the 25th James Bond movie, has a new release date of April 2, 2021. All the previous Bond movies are available on DVD or Blu-ray.
