Gavin and Stacey star James Corden has revealed he auditioned for a role in the Lord of the Rings franchise.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, The Late Late Show host admitted to trying out for the part of Samwise Gamgee, which ultimately went to Sean Astin.

When Horowitz asked how the audition went, Corden replied: "Not good. Every single person in London auditioned for Lord of the Rings. Everybody! I auditioned for Samwise and I was sort of, I was doing it, Josh! I was doing the accent and everything."

Corden also revealed that he and some friends actually got past the first stage of the audition process, explaining: "Two of my other friends went in. And then we all got called back the next day, and then we got called back the next day, and then none of us got called back after that."

Despite failing to land the part of Sam, Corden went on find fame in the UK for writing and starring in acclaimed British sitcom Gavin and Stacey before making it big in Hollywood.

The actor recently received some backlash after New York restaurant owner Keith McNally accused him of being rude to his staff.

Corden has since apologised for the "unnecessary" comments he made and said he "deeply regretted" it.

"Because I didn't shout, scream or use derogatory language, I have been walking around thinking: 'I haven't done anything wrong'," he continued.

"But the truth is, I have; I made a rude comment. It was wrong, and it was unnecessary. It was ungracious to the server."

The Late Late Show with James Corden airs on CBS in the US, and on Sky Comedy and NOW in the UK. The series will end in summer 2023.
