Disenchanted star Patrick Dempsey has spoken about his "completely freeing" role in the upcoming film.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, Dempsey, who plays Robert Philip, discussed the film's plot – which see Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert's life in the suburbs turned upside down after Giselle wishes it to be more like a fairytale.

Following Gisele's wish, she accidentally transforms the town into a real life fairytale (complete with each resident taking on a different fairytale trope) and finds herself in a race against time to put things right and save her family's happiness.

"Robert at the very beginning is very much the same, although he's kinda trying to balance, you know, life between his new baby and his other child," Dempsey said. "Getting into the larger than life [aspect of the film] was completely freeing and really fun. So for me, it was a fantastic ride.

"I had a great time where I could work a little bit, do some sightseeing in Ireland, and work on the musical that was great fun with the singing and the dancing. So it was fun," he added.

Dempsey also discussed his experience with singing and dancing in the upcoming film, revealing that he really enjoyed the process.

"Learning the lyrics and the dance was an extraordinary experience and something I'd never done before," he said. "It's an extraordinary feeling you get when you sing.

He added: "It was nice to be in the fairytale world for a while. It's a great opportunity to play something that was so broad. I don't get that opportunity and I really loved it. It's a little scary at first. But, you know, it's great. It was a safe environment to work in, and it was fun to play, and hopefully people enjoy that."

Disenchanted is released on Disney+ on November 18
