Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Release date, trailer, director, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Or should we say Captain America and the Winter Soldier?

Although we’re now 23 movies deep into the MCU, plenty of Marvel heroes like Falcon and the Winter Soldier are yet to star in their own franchise. However, that’s all set to change now thanks to Disney's new streaming service, Disney+ (or Disney Plus for those with fiddly keyboards).

Alongside Loki, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Vision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be pulled off the sidelines to finally star in their very own show together on the new platform. It’s about time that second-tier heroes like these are given a chance to shine, but this new team-up raises a number of questions too.

What’s life like now that the Star-Spangled Avenger is gone? How will the world react to a new Captain America? And how does Winter Soldier keep that metal arm so shiny? Join us as we keep you updated on everything you need to know about Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier release date: When will it premiere?

Stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan started filming Falcon and the Winter Soldier this October in Atlanta. If everything goes to plan, then Bucky and Sam will be the first Marvel heroes to soar on to Disney+ when their show hits the service in autumn 2020.

However, due to the coronavirus, production was halted and the release date is now uncertain.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier director: Who will direct it?

Kari Skogland has been tapped to direct all six episodes for Disney. While she’s renowned for helming key episodes of The Handmaid's Tale, the Canadian director has also tackled action-centric properties like The Walking Dead and even Marvel’s own The Punisher.

Joining her behind the scenes are Empire writer Malcolm Spellman and John Wick creator Derek Kolstad who will collaborate and write the show together. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will take on a more active role than usual by serving as a producer, presumably to hold the writers back from staging musical numbers and killing puppies.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast: Who will be in it?

It should probably come as no surprise that Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan will pull on the spandex again to play the titular heroes, although perhaps we should be calling Sam Captain America now post-Endgame.

Joining them in the fight against evil will be Emily Van Camp's Sharon Carter. The last time we saw Agent 13, she was making out with her great-uncle Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. Presumably, that uncomfortable plot point will be glossed over in favour of some SHIELD-related shenanigans instead.

At Comic-Con, it was revealed that the evil in question will be none other than the iconic Captain America villain Baron Zemo. Back in Civil War, Daniel Brühl’s character instigated the conflict which split the Avengers in two and subsequently weakened them in the fight against Thanos. So yeah, he’s bad news.

Although the Baron has no powers of his own, our first look at the new-and-improved villain revealed that he’ll be suitably chilling thanks to the debut of Zemo’s trademark purple mask from the comics.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier plot: What will happen?

Marvel hasn’t released any official plot details yet, but the show’s official logo includes Captain America’s shield, which suggests that Bucky and Sam will be working in Steve’s shadow – at least to start with.

Writer Marc Bernardin reinforced this notion during a recent podcast when he suggested that the government will resist Steve’s wishes, arguing that Sam Wilson shouldn’t be the new Captain America.

Whether this turns out to be true or not, it certainly makes a lot of sense, reflecting both the source material and some of the real-life resistance to Marvel’s decision too. The show will presumably strive to prove these various naysayers wrong, making it clear that Sam is worthy to follow in his friend’s footsteps.

Baron Zemo’s involvement has also led some to believe that Falcon and the Winter Soldier is setting up the arrival of a new Marvel team which he led in the comics. Masquerading as heroes, the Thunderbolts secretly worked as villains before a change of heart put them on the path of real heroism, much to Zemo’s chagrin. Whether they end up appearing on the show or not, it’s easy to see how Zemo’s increased profile in the MCU could lead to this somewhere later down the line.

It’s going to be a while before Sam and Bucky take flight in their very own trailer. Expect to see the first footage right here as soon as it's available.
