Yellowstone star Lilli Kay has revealed how the LGBTQ+ scene ended up in the show.
The actress, who plays Clara Brewer in the fifth season of the neo-Western drama, saw her character make out with a stranger in the seventh episode, leading several viewers to note how there were "lesbians on the ranch".
In an interview with Deadline, Kay revealed how the scene came about, disclosing that the character was played by her real-life partner: "We were in our Covid protocol. It was written that Clara is making out with someone in the background behind John (Kevin Costner) and Summer (Piper Perabo)," she said.

"We were trying to figure out who was easy and comfortable [to cast] who was also in the testing cycle," she continued. "My partner was there with me in Montana, so they said, 'oh, let's just have you guys make out in the background.' My partner's non-binary, so we're like 'well it's a gender fluid make out in the background.'"
Kay, whose character is an assistant to the Governor of Montana, continued by referencing the reaction to the scene, revealing that she didn’t expect the kiss to be such a big deal. "We thought, nobody’s going to make a big deal about it. And then a lot of people made a very big deal about it.

"It was very funny because I did not expect anyone to even really catch it. Then people were like, 'lesbians on the ranch!' It was a fun little evening. We got to listen to some really good music and hang out and quietly make out in the background," she continued.
The episode, which was broadcast on December 18, preceded last night's (January 1) mid-season finale; there's currently no air date for the remaining six episodes. In the intervening period, the latest spin-off series, 1923, began its run, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren starring in the lead roles.
