Smiley spoilers follow.
Has a show ever been more aptly named? Because yes, the title of Netflix's gay Spanish romcom Smiley does technically refer to the emoji that plays a key role in Àlex and Bruno's romance. But also, it's safe to say that pretty much anyone who gave this adorable series a chance was left with a big smile on their face too.
Although Smiley did end on a satisfying note, that hasn't stopped fans, AKA us, from campaigning to see more of Àlex and Bruno's relationship in a potential season two.
Grab a sangria and join us here at Digital Spy as we camp out at Netflix España HQ in a bid to get Smiley renewed for the second season we all deserve.
Smiley season 2 potential release date: When will Smiley season 2 air?
Netflix hasn't renewed Smiley for season two just yet, and it is possible that a renewal announcement will never come. If it does though, we imagine that new episodes might arrive around the same time season one did, but at the very end of 2023, instead of 2022.
After all, Smiley's festive setting has played a pretty big role in the story so far, and it would be great to catch up with Àlex and Bruno again one year later in their relationship.
Smiley season 2 cast: Who will be back for Smiley season 2?
If Smiley returns for another outing, expect to see most of the following cast members return, including the central couple:
• Carlos Cuevas as Àlex
• Miki Esparbé as Bruno Merino
• Pepón Nieto as Javier / Keena Mandrah
• Meritxell Calvo [es] as Verónica "Vero"
• Giannina Fruttero as Patri
• Eduardo Lloveras as Albert
• Ruth Llopis as Núria
One key figure who might stay out of the picture next time though is Cedrick Mugisha after Àlex abandoned his character, Ibra Ndiongue, at the airport in season one's finale.
Smiley season 2 plot: What will happen in Smiley season 2?
Smiley is based on a play of the same name by Guillem Clua, which suggests that Netflix's adaptation might just be a one-off show. Plus, the will-they/won't-they love story between Àlex and Bruno does reach a conclusion of sorts by the end of season one.
Finally, the pair figure things out and embark on a proper relationship together, but that doesn't mean Smiley has to end there. Sure, the main story has reached its conclusion, but the couple's future has been left very open-ended, so there's still a chance for more of Àlex and Bruno's story to unfold in a potential second season.
Ideally, it would be great to revisit the pair one year later and see how their relationship has fared against another festive backdrop, just like in season one.
However, if we had to guess right now, we wouldn't be surprised if Smiley remains a one-and-done show. And yes, our smile has been turned upside-down by this sad prospect.
