The Avengers are going waaaaay back in time for Marvel's latest comic series, Legacy.

A series of amazing covers have been released, teasing the upcoming series and they look pretty incredible.

Legacy will focus on the pre-historic superheroes – basically the very first team of Avengers ever. And they look pretty different from what we're used to.

There's Ghost Rider sitting atop a giant woolly mammoth and looking pretty terrifying and Star Brand – who looks like the Hulk if he wasn't green.

Also appearing is Black Panther, Phoenix, Iron Fist, Agamotto and Odin.

Legacy has been penned by Jason Aaron – who has also been posting pages from the first comic – and art by Esad Ribic.

Marvel's Axel Alonso warned everyone earlier this year that this series will probably "break the internet" as the ending will be epic.

"That story functions as a preview of what's to come. It's chocked full of twists, surprises, Easter eggs, and let's just say, a last-page reveal that's probably gonna break the internet.

"It's a big moment, something we continually get asked about. We are going to answer that question."

Alonso also mentioned that the series would be "ushering in the return of some big characters who've been missed".

Marvel Legacy No. 1 will be released in comic book stores and digitally on September 27.
