It's been just under a year since Marvel Comics' Captain America uttered the two words that rocked comics fans and revealed that Steve Rogers wasn't actually the hero we thought he was.
Marvel comics delivered a shocking twist when Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 first went on sale in May 2015, revealing that Cap was outed as a sleeper agent in the evil, former Nazi organisation Hydra.
The twist led to shock and outrage for months, right up until the point when Marvel revealed that Captain America wasn't actually a fascist all along, and the original Steve Rogers #1 reveal was explained away by the fact that Red Skull used the living Cosmic Cube Kobik to rewrite Steve's history into one where he was recruited into Hydra as a child in the 1920s.
And then along came today's new series, Secret Empire #0, and the actual, honest-to-God, we-swear-it-this-time truth – and spoilers for the comic with it.
And that truth is: Captain America has never been a hero, his history was never rewritten and he actually helped the Axis powers to win World War II.
As Secret Empire #0 tells it, Nazi Germany won the war and it was the Allied nations who rewrote history using the Cosmic Cube to make it so the Allies won.
That whole Kobik rewriting history story? Nope. It turns out Kobik was actually restoring Cap's true history – the one in which he's always been loyal to Hydra.
So, in a nutshell: Cap's always been a villain, and everything we've ever seen Captain America do in the Marvel Comics-verse since he debuted in 1941 was actually a lie created by Allies with the reality-warping Cosmic Cube in an effort to save the world from the Nazis.
And you all thought Captain America: Civil War was heartbreaking...
The next stage of Cap's Secret Empire story will be here on May 3, while Chris Evans's MCU version of the hero (villain? hero-villain?) will pop up in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, before taking on a bigger role in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.
