No, Marvel hasn't cancelled the X-Men

The week in comics - Comic-Con 2016 and Doctor Strange vs the Punisher.

X-Men
Marvel Comics

Here's your weekly round-up from the world of comics, from Geoff Johns's promotion to more San Diego Comic-Con 2016 announcements:

Marvel is still making X-Men comics

Marvel Comics

The recent Marvel NOW! previews that were completely lacking in X-Men books revived the old story that the publisher is trying to bury them in favour of the Inhumans (a bit like the rumours that they were killing off their Fantastic Four titles, which actually turned out to be true).

Could the Death of X storyline - which deals in part with what happened to Cyclops after Secret Wars - literally be the death of mutantkind?

Put your fears to rest. At Comic-Con, Marvel Comics made it clear that the X-Men live, with Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men and Extraordinary X-Men all confirmed to be continuing.

But the mutant/inhuman rivalry is very much alive too, with Charles Soule, Jeff Lemire and Leinil Yu announced to be working on an event called Inhumans vs X-Men, with "the fate of their species at stake".

Geoff Johns promoted to DC Entertainment president

Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage

That Geoff Johns is a busy man. On top of being DC's chief creative officer, co-head of the new DC Films and writing a load of comics and films (like Wonder WomanAquaman and Shazam), he is now the newly instated DC Entertainment president.

Confusingly, he'll be reporting to the other DC Entertainment president, Diane Nelson. When things calm down enough for him to remember his own name, presumably.

Image Comics go big at the Eisner Awards

Image Comics

What would Comic-Con be without the annual Eisner Awards?

Image are surely patting themselves on the back after scoring Best Continuing Series for Jason Aaron and Jason Latour's Southern Bastards, Best Limited Series for Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's The Fade Out, and Best New Series for Brian K Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's Paper Girls.

Drawn & Quarterly also bagged multiple awards: Kate Beaton (Best Humor Publication for Step Aside, Pops), Shigeru Mizuki (Best American Edition of International Material - Asia for Showa 1953-1989), Jillian Tamaki (Best Publication for Teens for SuperMutant Magic Academy) and Adrian Tomine (Best Short Story for 'Killing and Dying').
