Willow season one spoilers follow.
In the showiest showdown peppered with juicy twists, Willow has come to an end. While there seemed to be a significant defeat (*side-eye*), there's still plenty left to work with for a possible season two.
The question is, will fans be getting one?
Here's what we know so far.
Willow season 2 potential release date: When's it on?
Disney+ has yet to confirm Willow's fate, but we have every hope that in the coming weeks, this will change.
The response to the television series has divided fans of the original 1988 film, of which the show is a continuation. People's split opinion puts hopes of a season two in jeopardy, as the viewers naturally play a massive part in renewal decision-making.
While Disney+ may remain tight-lipped to date, the Willow creative team has been vocal about their enthusiasm to continue the narrative journey.
When asked about whether the series would return for another season, showrunner Jonathan Kasdan told ComicbookMovie.com: "I hope so. We're certainly working at it, and I'm begging Kathy [Kennedy] because working with these actors and this crew of filmmakers on this show has been the best experience."
He added: "We still feel like there are a lot of stories and bigger places to visit."
Willow season 2 cast: Who will be coming back?
If Willow is awarded a second season, who will be along for the adventure? For the most part, Willow and his merry-sarcastic-snippy band escaped season one unscathed, so we would expect the following to return:
• Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood
• Ellie Bamber as Elora Danan
• Ruby Cruz as Princess Kit Tanthalos
• Erin Kellyman as Jade Claymore
• Amar Chadha-Patel as Boorman
• Dempsey Bryk as Prince Airk Tanthalos
• Joanne Whalley as Queen Sorsha
Prince Graydon's fate is a little more complicated, but we fully expect Tony Revolori to return to the role in some capacity but more on that below.
Willow season 2 plot: What will happen?
So much happened in the final episode of Willow that even the naysayers might be intrigued by a second season.
There are definitely more battles to be fought, as the evil entity known as the Wyrm still lives. Elora Danan, however, has more than proved she's up to the task of demolishing her foes.
The finale hints at Willow and company amassing more followers to aid in the fight to come — which means new characters, new struggles, and possibly some losses.
As for the Crone, Elora took down the master manipulator, but could her effects still linger?
The Crone had her hooks deep into Airk, so much so that even in her death, she imbues him with her Crone-y energy.
Thankfully, after Airk's sisters defeat him in a duel, Kit is able to reach into her brother's mind (with Willow's help) and coax him back to the light side.
While it seemed to have worked, Airk still bears the facial disfigurement of the Crone's influence — so has he fully been cured? After all, while alive, the Crone referred to him as being Harbinger of the Wyrm and as Bavmorda's second coming.
It's not a wild leap to suggest that her influence could still linger within Airk. Perhaps his part in bringing forth the era of the Wyrm may not be over.
Speaking of the Wyrm, the presumed-dead Graydon may also play a part in its resurrection.
After the Crone obliterates him 'to death' and sends him through an ethereal portal, Graydon wakes up, fully assembled, upon a mass of dead bodies. The bodies of soldiers (presumably Tir Aisleen), to be exact.
He's then met by an entity wearing Elora's face. We know this thanks to her stylish new choppy haircut and evil demeanour.
Evil Elora begins a villainous speech in which she tells Graydon the place they are standing is "the end."
"The beginning of the dawn of the next age of this world. My age," she says, going on to explain that she can't rule alone and that she needs someone by her side.
Graydon, you lucky chap! She's talking about you (which she explicitly states later). However, Graydon doesn't look enamoured by this proposition.
Could it be because this is possibly the Wyrm assuming Elora's form? Either way, this means Graydon will have to plot his escape — unless, of course, he succumbs to the same brain-washing Airk did.
We sense another rescue mission, but first, they have to figure out he's alive. Good thing he's also a sorcerer. Maybe he can send a magical message?
The question of Madmartigan's return has been on fans' lips since the series first started.
He's been presumed dead throughout the season, but there's reason to believe that he could still be alive.
During the Crone's attempt to tempt his daughter Kit to her side, Madmartigan appeals to her telepathically, urging her to fight through the guise. Thankfully, it works — but surely that means he'd have to be alive to have been able to do so.
It's possible that it could be him reaching her from the great beyond, but it could be the creators' way of leaving the door open for Val Kilmer's return.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kasdan spoke on Kilmer's return to the franchise, saying: "We really wanted Val to come be in the show, and Val really wanted to come out and be in the show.
"I remember going to see Val right after this thing started to get some momentum, and I said: 'Listen, we're doing this. And the whole world wants Madmartigan back.' And he was like: 'Not as much as I do.'"
In addition to filming during the pandemic, Kilmer's previous health scares were part of the reason he opted out of the first season — which means there's hope that he could return later on down the line.
His comeback could open up old wounds for Kit, who's conflicted about his abandoning the family. It would make for an interesting family reunion.

There's an order to these things, and first, Willow must get that coveted green light for a second season. After that, we can talk trailers.
