The Menu director addresses dark theory about the ending

How bad was that cheeseburger really?

The Menu spoilers follow.

The Menu, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, baffled and delighted fans in equal measure when it was released late last year.

The black comedy sees Joy and Hoult as young couple Margot and Tyler, who are guests at an upscale restaurant run by enigmatic celebrity chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes).

But it soon turns out Slowik's menu is more sinister than scrumptious, as the chef's plan is to kill off his guests, his staff and himself with his dishes.

However the film ends with Margot enacting a plan where she asks Slowik to make her a cheeseburger (a nod to his past in a fast-food restaurant) and asks for it 'to go'. The Chef allows her to leave and she departs in a boat, while the restaurant goes ablaze.

The film's closing shot is Margot biting into the burger and hearing a clap in the distance. But did she really survive? After all, she did eat a burger prepared by Slowik.

Speaking to Den Of Geek, director Mark Mylod was asked about a fan theory which speculates that Margot did actually die and the only reason Slowik let her go was because he knew the burger would kill her anyway.

The director said that, while he welcomes audiences to interpret the ending however they want, Margot didn't die. In fact, the script actually had several ideas for the ending, including restaurant maître d' Elsa coming back on the boat.

Mylod described the closing shot of Margot biting into the burger as ultimately: "a victory bite, if you like. It’s a fuck you, I beat you!"

Speaking to Digital Spy in November, Nicholas Hoult revealed he had no idea how the film was going to end when he first read the script.

"I'm not smart enough to see at all where it was going, I was really enjoying the ride," Hoult said, adding that the many twists and turns eventually made sense.

"I was like: 'What is this?' and then, that was really fun – getting to the end and I was like: 'Ah, I didn't see any of that, this all makes sense.'"

After reading the script for the first time, the X-Men star said he went back through it to see if there were any hidden clues.

"Going back and reading again, piecing together little tidbits of information in the moment, where [I was] like: 'Oh, that makes sense.'"

The Menu is now available to watch on Disney+.
