Sex Education star Asa Butterfield has opened up about his new Christmas rom-com Your Christmas or Mine?

The new movie sees the actor and Cora Kirk play a young couple who secretly decide to surprise each other for Christmas at their respective families', unaware of each other's plans.

They both turn up at each other's family homes, though end up trapped after a huge snowstorm blankets the UK.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Butterfield admitted that he was hesitant to sign on to a Christmas movie initially.

"I've never done a Christmas movie," he revealed. "I'd never really thought about doing a Christmas movie you know, not because I don't like them. It's just kind of it's a sort of genre that I've kind of forgotten about.

"I love Christmas, so I read it and I was like, hang on, this would be so much fun. And the writing was great.

"I felt like this really captured the kind of chaos as well as the kind of fun and the joy of Christmas. It's hard to do. It's hard to make an original Christmas script. I feel like [screenwriter] Tom [Parry] found a very clever idea and ran with it."

The star went on to admit that "British humour definitely has its sort of uniqueness to it", whether "being incredibly deadpan or self-deprecating or having those barbs underneath the smile".

"When you really love someone, you can take the piss out of them," he added. "It's gonna be fine because you love each other. And you're the only one who can kind of put that out there. On Christmas you kind of just dial that up."

Your Christmas or Mine? premieres on Prime Video on December 2.
