The Last of Us gets renewed for season 2

No stopping the fungus.

The Last of Us will return for a second season.

In a decision that will surprise nobody, the horror series that has inspired a new fear of mushrooms has been officially picked up by HBO and Sky after only two episodes have aired.

Executive producer Neil Druckmann said today: "I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations.

"Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!"

Executive producer Craig Mazin added: "I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in."

The renewal announcement comes only a few days after Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the series, predicted that a second season commission was quite likely.

"If people keep watching, I think [season 2] is pretty likely," Ramsey told BBC Sounds this week. "It's down to the guys at HBO. There's nothing confirmed yet so we'll have to wait and see."

The Last of Us has indeed been a phenomenal success for HBO in its first two weeks, with the premiere episode's 10 million viewers across multiple platforms making it one of the channel's biggest launches ever.

The second episode, 'Infected', actually improved on the premiere by adding 1 million more live viewers this past Sunday night.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
