The Last of Us has released its latest trailer, showing Joel and Ellie’s struggle for survival.
The HBO series, which is based on the 2013 game of the same name, stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the pair who travel across a post-apocalyptic United States to find a cure for a deadly virus.
Previous teasers have only shown glimpses of the relationship that was central to the success of Naughty Dog’s game, but the latest trailer, soundtracked to a remix of A-ha’s ‘Take On Me’ (a nod to The Last of Us: Part II) is the most revealing so far.

One amusing moment sees Ellie displaying her trademark humour, with the teenager imitating the mannerisms of the infected population. It also looks like elements from Left Behind, the downloadable content (DLC) for the game, have been used for the narrative, with one clip showing Ellie and Riley (Storm Reid) interacting.
Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the actors who voiced Joel and Ellie in the original game, but their roles remain undisclosed for now. The cast also includes Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv and Merle Dandridge, who play Tommy, Tess and Marlene respectively.

The series has been created and written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the original game, with composer Gustavo Santaolalla also returning.
The first season, which will consist of nine episodes, will premiere on January 15 on HBO in the US, and a day later on Sky Atlantic for UK viewers. Each instalment will be available at the same time as the US premiere each week at 2 am and on demand thereafter.
