Sex Education season 4 has seen a lot of cast exits – and it could lead to us seeing a very different show when it returns to Netflix.
Talking to Digital Spy for the release of new movie Living, Aimee Lou Wood – who has played Aimee Gibbs from the beginning – revealed that it's not just the cast exits that have led to changes, but also the plot itself.
"The characters feel like they're in very new territory because they literally are, they're at a new school. A lot of our feeling slightly off-centre is actually also just because of what is happening in the story which is that they are [at] a new school," she explained.
"Aimee, particularly, her best friend's in America, she doesn't have a boyfriend for the first time ever, she's at a brand new school where she doesn't have any mates. So there's a lot of newness for all of the characters and I think that that does make the show feel very new."
It's certainly not a bad thing for a show to change things up to keep it fresh, even when it's such a hit show already.
For Wood, the changes have created a "fun acting challenge" to ensure that the characters still feel like the ones we fell in love with.
"[It's about] maintaining who they are when everything around us is different because it really does feel different. We've got different directors, different writers, so it's very, very, very new which can also be exciting," she added.
"We definitely love all the new additions, they're all amazing, but we also definitely miss the people who exited, we really do miss them."
Last month, Emma Mackey – who plays Aimee's best friend Maeve Wiley – revealed that she has a slightly reduced role as a result of the last season, which saw Maeve decide to head to the US to study.
Sex Education seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix now. Season 4 is now in production.
