Outlander is ending with its eighth season.

Spanning different historical eras and continents — and bringing kilts back into fashion — the series has been around for what feels like an eternity. (Fitting considering its lead characters Claire and Jamie have travelled across eternity to find one another.)

But, sadly, Starz has confirmed that Outlander will come to an end after season eight (via Deadline).

However, fans of the show will be happy to hear that this isn't a full stop on the Outlander world, as a prequel series is already in development.

According to Deadline, we'll get 16 episodes of season seven of Outlander, ten episodes of season eight, and ten episodes of the spin-off Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

The prequel show will focus on an unlikely love story — this time, the story of Jamie's parents Ellen and Brian. As fans know from Outlander, Jamie's folks went through plenty of trials and tribulations of their own on the way to happiness.

Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer explained: "Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain."

He added: "The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser's marriage vow to Claire, and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognise."

Sounds like fans will get to see younger versions of some of their favourite Highlanders.

The exec also hinted that even more Outlander content is in the pipeline, saying: "With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans."

Maybe a Black Jack Randall prequel is in order, since there must be an explanation as to how anyone could turn out that evil.

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, and streams on Lionsgate+ in the UK.
