Death in Paradise is getting a British makeover, with DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) set to swap the Caribbean tropics for the salty air of Devonshire in his new spinoff.

And, it turns out that location won't be the only change for Beyond Paradise, with the episodes and plot following a fresh formula.

Death won't be the only crime for Goodman to solve, and the episodes' grand reveals will take on a new tone.

Tony Jordan, who serves as writer for the series, spoke to Radio Times about how the two series will align and diverge, saying: "It’s got the same uplifting escapism as Death in Paradise, and a puzzle to work out in every episode.

"The way we differentiate it is, it’s not always murder, and the way we do our reveal has changed. We’ve taken the good stuff, and we’ve added to it, and made it slightly different."

And, for fans of the aesthetic of the original, Jordan stressed that the spinoff will be "100 per cent as beautiful as Death in Paradise," even suggesting: "You know what? It may rain less, because we film in the rainy season in Guadeloupe."

More drama, less rain – no complaints here!

Earlier this month, we were treated to a first look at the series, and it sounds like the puzzles to crack will be truly unique and varied.

The synopsis shared: "The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

Well, DI Goodman and his fiancée Martha Lloyd will certainly have an unforgettable engagement in this mysterious locale of the English Riviera.

Death in Paradise returns on Boxing Day on BBC One followed by series 12 from January 6, 2023. A spinoff, Beyond Paradise, is in production.
