Emma Mackey has responded to comparisons with Margot Robbie, admitting she finds them "funny".

The Sex Education star is due to appear alongside Robbie in new movie Barbie, though over the years many fans have suggested they look rather identical.

Speaking to Total Film, Mackey explained that the similarities in part play into why she was cast in the new movie.

"It's just funny," she said. "And I think Margot has had the grace and humour to be able to play on that, and allow me to be in the same film as her – bless her.

"It's just a joke in real life. I'm like, 'We don't look anything like each other.' I don't mind it. It's Margot Robbie. Are you kidding me? She's the best. I look up to her so much. I don't mind the comparisons. But it would be nice to move past that."

Speaking further about the movie, Mackey teased how the tone will play out, calling it "very unexpected in many ways".

"I think people are going to have an idea of the film, and I don't think it's going to be that," she said. "It's going to be a surprise. I'm really excited. And it's a comedy, thank God. No crying in this film! Let me tell you that. No crying! It was great to do pure comedy – an American comedy, as well. And I got to work with some heroes."

Back in July, the actress confirmed that there will be multiple versions of Barbie in the movie, telling Empire Magazine: "Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott Evans and Ncuti [Gatwa]."

Mackey will next be seen in Emily Brontë biopic Emily, which has received rave reviews following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Barbie will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
