The Crown star Helena Bonham Carter insists Netflix drama shouldn’t "carry on"

The Crown alum Helena Bonham Carter has given her opinion on the future of the mammoth Netflix show — and she thinks it should end sooner rather than later.

Bonham Carter played Princess Margaret in seasons three and four of The Crown after she took over the role from Vanessa Kirby. Lesley Manville then took over the role in season five.

However, with season five and the upcoming season six encroaching into modern history, Bonham Carter said in an interview with The Guardian that she feels the show should end rather soon.

"I should be careful here too, but I don’t think they should carry on, actually. I’m in it and I loved my episodes, but it’s very different now," Bonham Carter said.

"When The Crown started it was a historic drama, and now it’s crashed into the present. But that’s up to them."

The Crown has received increasing criticism as the show begins to explore modern-day history, particularly in the wake of the Queen's death and the real-life drama involving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

However, several of the show's cast have defended the series from criticism including Margaret Thatcher actress Gillian Anderson.

"There's a lot of researchers involved, and a lot of people checking and double-checking and triple-checking," Anderson said.

"There's a lot that has not been written about that could be written about. And if you knew the difference in those, you'd see there is a great deal of kindness and restraint. At the end of the day, there are incredibly compassionate and well-rounded takes on human beings."

The Crown seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-4 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
