Eurovision Song Contest confirms 2022 winner

Who took the crown?

The Eurovision Song Contest has confirmed its 2022 winner, with Kalush Orchestra walking away with the crown for Ukraine.

Tonight's (May 14) grand finale in Turin saw the finalists go head-to-head in a night filled with plenty of emotion – though only one could walk home the victor.

Once both the jury and public votes were tallied up, Ukraine came out on top after wowing with their entry 'Stefania', scoring a total of 631 points.

The Kalush Orchestra's performance earlier in the evening – which was a blend of hip-hop and folk – wowed fans, with many tipping them to win the competition.

Speaking after their win, rapper Oleh Psiuk said: "Thank you so much, thank you for supporting Ukraine. This victory is for every Ukrainian! Slava Ukraini!"

The United Kingdom broke a huge losing streak by coming second, having initially won the jury vote before scoring a total of 466 points once the public votes came in, while Spain came third with 459 points.

The UK entry Sam Ryder performed his swirling song 'Space Man' earlier in the evening, and his second place was no doubt well-earned, especially after last year's nul points.

2022's contest has been widely talked about given the current political landscape, with Russia banned from this year's contest amid the war in Ukraine.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed in February that they would not be allowed to take part due to the "unprecedented crisis in Ukraine", saying that to include Russia would bring the competition into "disrepute".

The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
