Trigger Point season 2 potential release date, cast, plot, trailer and everything you need to know

Is more tension on the way for Lana?

If Trigger Point season two is as nail-biting as season one then viewers are in for a treat (you know, barring the slightly flat finish to the tense episode that was its finale).

EXPO (explosives officer) Lana Washington (Vicky McClure) has more lives than the chorus of Cats. She managed narrowly to escape being blown up countless times in the ITV thriller drama, despite being pushed to her EXPO limits by terrorist group The Crusaders.

The far-right Crusaders made things personal when they claimed the lives of Wash's best friend and colleague Joel 'Nut' Nutkins (Adrian Lester) and her sometimes messed-up brother Billy (Ewan Mitchell).

However, the criminal mastermind behind them was kind enough to leave a breadcrumb trail of clues to help her and her team of EXPO experts Scooby-Doo their way to the truth. The truth being that it was Lana's bit on the side who was the puppet master behind The Crusaders' vicious, well, crusade.

This kick in the teeth would be enough to send many running but will our favourite EXPO be able to dust down the explosive debris and return for a second season?

Showrunner Jed Mercurio certainly hoped so (via Nine).

"We would love the opportunity to do more because we just feel it's one of those areas that hasn't really been explored, particularly in terms of the world we live in now, it feels topical. If we're fortunate enough to be successful, and the audience likes it in sufficient numbers, then we'd relish the opportunity for another series."

Writer Daniel Brierley also saw Trigger Point as a multi-season drama (via Memorable TV).

"Very much so, because Lana is such an involving person and throughout the first series she’s really finding herself. There are lots of places for her to go as a character and I really want to follow her journey. Plus, the world of bomb disposal and counterterrorism is a really exciting one for a drama. I hope the audience is drawn into the world we’ve created, and that it feels tense, exciting and real."

So, did the audience respond in large enough numbers to bring back Trigger Point? Let's find out.

Trigger Point season 2 potential release date: When's it on?

Fans of McClure will be thrilled to know that Trigger Point has indeed been confirmed for another season.

It's hardly surprising given the show's increasing popularity. By the time the finale had aired approximately 11 million viewers had watched the first episode.

ITV's head of drama Polly Hill was responsible for commissioning the second season. Of its renewal, she said: "I am so delighted to see Trigger Point return.

"Vicky is stunning as Lana and it's brilliantly produced by Jed and HTM, but I also want to congratulate Daniel for his scripts. To have held the audience in a state of tension for six hours so brilliantly, you can't believe it's his first show. I can't wait to see where series two takes Lana and her team."

Jed Mercurio also commented: "Everyone at HTM Television is thrilled by the success of Trigger Point. Thanks to all our brilliant cast and crew and especially to the viewers who watched in such large numbers. We've received unswerving support from ITV throughout the production and we are delighted to have been commissioned for a second series."

Season one landed in late January 2022, so we wouldn't expect another season until the new year.

It's been confirmed that Vicky McClure will be reprising the role of Lana Washington. That's probably not surprising, as she's said that the show is one of the major highlights of her career (via BT).

"It was an incredible job and I'm really proud of it. It was a brilliant cast of people and the crew really did look after each other. It was a tough shoot and there were a lot of elements to get right, building a whole new world. I have never been on a job quite that big, which I suppose would shock people, because you think Line of Duty is the same.

"But I can lean on Martin and Adrian a little bit on that series, where they'll have an interview scene without me and that means I’ve got four days off. Trigger Point was the first time I've felt like a crew member, when I'm there every day all day. I was massively invested in the show and I gave it my everything."

Sadly Adrian Lester will obviously not be joining her as Nut considering his very early demise.

Though it has not been confirmed just yet, we would expect DI Thom Youngblood (Mark Stanley) to return as Wash's lukewarm lover.

Wash has a great dynamic with bomb data expert Sonya Reeves (Kerry Godliman) and a good friendship so we hope more of that will be on its way.

We may see some new additions to her team of fellow EXPOs and uniform cops but John Hudson (Kris Hitchen), Danny (Eric Shango) and inspector Lee Robins (Cal MacAninch) would be expected to make up some of the squad.

Manjinder Virk and Nadine Marshall made an impression as DI Samira Desai and DSU Marianne Hamilton respectively so it would be a surprise if they didn't make a return.

Bad guy Karl Maguire (Warren Brown) will of course not be invited to the return party given that he didn't make it.

More twisted, stranded wires for Wash to handle and definitely more explosions are almost certainly on their way.

Considering our villain of the piece (aka Karl) was captured and executed in the final episode we can expect there will be a new foe to contend with.

The show will likely explore the lagging relationship between Wash and DI Youngblood as well as delving into the contention between Wash and John Hudson, who felt he should have been promoted over her.

Apart from that, it's all up for grabs narrative-wise. The new kid on the block, Daniel Brierly, has got some style and knows how to pace the tension so we can expect a gripping plot at the very least.

By the sounds of things he may already have a storyline up his sleeve.

"I'm honoured and excited to be given the chance to continue Lana's story," he said. "I feel there's many more twists and turns in her future. It's been thrilling to see how the public have responded to our show and I can't wait to see what they will make of the next instalment!"
