Strictly Come Dancing's Claudia Winkleman opens up about brand new BBC show

She originally said no.

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman has opened up about her brand new BBC game show The Traitors.

The upcoming series sees competitors have to work together to complete missions. However, strategy and suspicion will come into play as they have to work out who are the traitors among them or risk losing all their money.

In a new interview with Radio Times, Strictly's Winkleman said that she actually turned down the offer of hosting the programme when BBC director of unscripted shows Kate Phillips offered it to her. Winkleman said she didn't like the idea of spending three weeks in Scotland as she "never leave[s] London".

"I'm going to assume 50 people said no, but I just said, 'No, I can't because my daughter's doing GCSEs and I like to lick the little one and I mean, my big one is older but still, I just like to follow him around,'" Winkleman said.

However, producers managed to convince her to reconsider the offer by persuading her to watch the Dutch version of The Traitors, which is what the new BBC show is actually based on.

"They said, 'Why don't you just watch the Dutch version and then decide?' so I watched the Dutch version and I mean, nobody got fed. I didn't brush my teeth. I was so obsessed that then I had to phone Kate and I said, 'I've booked a train, I'm going to Scotland now.' She was like, 'Filming doesn't start for months,'" Winkleman said.

"So it's a privilege, I am so lucky. I got so deep like never before. I would phone my husband – I think he was my husband, I didn't even care. He was like, 'I think French went well,' and I was like, 'You're not gonna believe what [contestant] Will has done.'"

The Traitors will debut on BBC One on Tuesday, November 29 at 9.30pm.
