Sex Education star Gillian Anderson's The First Lady cancelled after one season

Viola Davis and Michelle Pfeiffer also starred in the anthology.

The First Lady, an anthology focusing on the lives of the women married to some of America's most famous Presidents, will not be returning for a second season.

Despite featuring huge name actresses like Sex Education and The X Files' Gillian Anderson (Eleanor Roosevelt), How to Get Away with Murder and The Suicide Squad's Viola Davis (Michelle Obama), and Ant-Man and the Wasp and Murder on the Orient Express' Michelle Pfeiffer (Betty Ford), network Showtime elected not to commission more episodes.

The broadcaster issued a statement to Deadline that congratulated the cast and crew on their work for the first season, but did not indicate a reason for the axe.

"Showtime can confirm that the anthology series The First Lady will not be moving forward with another season. We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast – led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson – and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders."

The showrunners previously expressed their intention to follow the stories of First Ladies like Melania Trump, Hilary Clinton, Martha Washington, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and more in further seasons.

Viola Davis will soon be seen in The Woman King, which follows an elite unit of all-female warriors in an African Kingdom in the 1800s, and is based on a true story. It's out in a few months, and has an action-packed trailer.

Meanwhile, Gillian Anderson has signed a deal with Netflix to give them a first pass on projects from her production company Fiddlehead Productions for the next two years.

The First Lady streams on Paramount+ in the UK, and aired on Showtime and the Paramount+ with Showtime bundle in the US.
