Doctor Who is at a turning point right now, with the return of Russell T Davies and Ncuti Gatwa being confirmed as the next Doctor. Many people are waiting with bated breath to see if the revamp will deliver, as it did when Davies revived the show in 2005.

Of course, fans will remember a previous attempt at reviving the franchise that didn't go so well: the much-panned 1996 TV movie starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor.

That movie is the focus of new documentary Doctor Who Am I, which follows the TV movie's writer Matthew Jacobs as he tries to move past both the negative reception and his own personal demons to engage with the fandom again.

We at Digital Spy have a lot of positive things to say about it.

After its premiere at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival, it has been announced that the documentary will have a release in select cinemas from October 13 in the UK, followed by a release on DVD and digital storefronts on November 7.

In a statement, Jacobs said: "Now, more than ever, we need a positive movie about Doctor Who fandom as we move towards the show’s 60th anniversary.

"We’re so excited [distributor] Kaleidoscope, like audiences have, recognise that our documentary is essential viewing for all lovers of storytelling."

Director Vanessa Yuille added: "We're a small movie with a big heart, and Kaleidoscope saw that right away.

"Teaming up with Kaleidoscope is a perfect match for us because even though we're an American movie, they understand the Doctor Who franchise and the global reach of the fandom. They can bring our documentary from the Whoniverse to the Universe."

Doctor Who's next special premieres in October 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams exclusively on BritBox in the UK.
