Doctor Who adds EastEnders legend and It's A Sin star to upcoming series

Doctor Who's next series has added even more impressive names to its cast.

The BBC show confirmed today (January 20) that EastEnders legend Anita Dobson and It's A Sin's Michelle Greenidge will be appearing in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.

First-look pictures of the two stars in character have been released, with showrunner Russell T Davies praising the castings on his Instagram page.

"DOCTOR WHO NEWS! Anita Dobson joins us, oh the honour! EastEnders, Strictly, Doctor Who, Anita IS the BBC!" he said. "And Michelle Greenidge joins us too, my old mate from It’s a Sin. What an amazing cast from @andypryorcasting."

Davies went on to tease: "But what is the significance of the doors…?"

Dobson is of course best known for playing Angie Watts on EastEnders in the late 1980s, while Greenidge previously worked with Davies on It's A Sin, playing Rosa Babatunde.

Before the next series, which will see Ncuti Gatwa take over as the Fifteenth Doctor alongside new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), the show will air three specials to mark the show's 60th anniversary with David Tennant returning to play the Fourteenth Doctor.

Ahead of the new episodes, Davies has reassured fans about Disney+'s involvement in the series, with the company distributing the show outside the UK going forward.

"I know people are, naturally, worried about American producers having notes on things. Well, don't be. They're giving excellent notes," he told Doctor Who Magazine.

"And I'm here to tell you, you haven't watched a drama on British television in 20 years that hasn't had American notes on it. Everything is a co-production... it's really, completely normal."

Doctor Who returns in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
