The Sandman on Netflix season 1 spoilers.
The Sandman director Hisko Hulsing has explained how David Tennant and Sandra Oh joined the cat episode.
The duo are part of an incredible voice cast for a two-parter bonus episode in season 1, 'Dream of a Thousand Cats', where some of the feline friends Morpheus has made share their stories about him.
David is joined by his wife Georgia Tennant for scenes with Good Omens co-star Michael Sheen and his partner Anna Lundberg, plus vocal cameos from Gaiman himself, comedian Joe Lycett and James McAvoy, among others.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the episode, Hisko Hulsing explained how the unexpected Good Omens reunion for Tennant, Sheen and Gaiman came about.
"I wasn't involved in the casting, but I was extremely happy to have these fantastic actors on board," Hisko said. "If this would have been a live-action episode, it would have been much harder to get them on board and match all their agenda’s to be on a set in London.
"But going to a sound studio and record a part in a Soundbooth can be done more easily in between other activities. So it is probably because 'A Dream of a Thousand Cats' is animated, that the producers and showrunners were able to get their dream actors to perform for us!
"All recordings were done over Zoom. I was always present, as well as Warner Bros producer Andrew Cholerton, showrunner Allan Heinberg, my assistant Nora Hoppener and sometimes Neil Gaiman joined the session."
The filmmaker also addressed the viral trend of actual cats watching 'Dream of a Thousand Cats' with their owners.
"This is one of the biggest threats for humanity right now, apart from climate change and the rise of populism," Hisko joked. "The possibility that all these cats who watch 'A Dream of a Thousand Cats', get the same dream at the same time.
"I would feel so guilty for having helped out the Prophet!"
The Sandman season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
