Netflix responds to reports of dire conditions on new Squid Game reality show

"All precautions were taken to ensure the game was played safely."

Netflix has responded to reports of dire conditions on the set of its Squid Game reality show.

The South Korean survival-drama proved to be a huge hit with both critics and audiences when released in 2021, with the streaming service subsequently ordering a second season and a spin-off reality show, Squid Game: The Challenge.

The show sees 456 contestants – the same number as in the original series – compete in a series of tasks for a mega £3.7 million prize, but filming has been beset by numerous accusations of appalling set conditions.

The first challenge – called 'Red Light, Green Light' – saw the hopefuls reportedly stand still in temperatures of -3C, with some tearful contestants allegedly being stretchered off the set due to the freezing conditions.

Netflix has responded to the accusations, saying (via The Sun): "Netflix, Studio Lambert and The Garden takes contributor care as one of its highest priorities and regular toilet breaks, water and food are categorically standard practice on production.

"All contestants were prepared by production several weeks ago that they would be playing a game in cold conditions and participated knowing this. All precautions were taken to ensure the game was played safely," they concluded.

The show, which is due to continue filming for the next month, was met with enthusiasm by original series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who eased concerns about a non-fictional show replicating a dystopian vision.

"What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show," he said.

"Even though our show does carry quite a heavy message – I know that there are some concerns on taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize – I feel like when you take things too seriously, that's really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn't really set a great precedent."

Squid Game season 1 is streaming now on Netflix. Season 2 has been confirmed. Squid Game: The Challenge will also stream on Netflix.
