Superman & Lois star Jordan Elsass reveals reason for leaving series

"It's been a tough few weeks."

Superman & Lois is gearing up to return for its third season, but things will look a little bit different.

One of its main characters, Jonathan Kent, won't be played by Jordan Elsass this time around and the role is being recast.

Elsass has kept quiet on his socials since the announcement was made, but now he has opened up about his reasons for leaving the show.

In a Cameo video that has been shared to Twitter, the actor said: "It's been a tough few weeks, as you might imagine, with everything going on with the show. It's sad, it's a real shame.

"I know that I was pumped for season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100 percent priority. It's pinnacle. It's got to take precedence. And mine has been… the last couple of years… it's been rough.

"I need some time to myself. I'm still debating whether I'm even going to act for a while. I may go in a different direction. I know that's definitely going to be disappointing to some people."

The actor, who will turn 21 later this month, has IMDb credits dating back to 2014, so he has been acting professionally since he was a relatively young age.

Another thing we know about season 3 is that it will introduce Bruno Mannheim, the leader of infamous criminal organisation Intergang.

Speaking about how the show landed on this villain and what impact he will have, showrunner Todd Helbing said: "Every year, at some point, I talk to DC, and there's a deck that's created that tells us which are the characters that we can explore.

"I put in requests [and] there are roads that I can go down, sometimes fully, sometimes half, sometimes not at all. If it's not at all, then we just come up with a different version of it."

"Bruno is going to be a huge part of season three and is going to be huge impact on multiple characters. And if you watch season one and season two… there are a lot of pieces in place that could take us to a certain spot."

Superman & Lois airs on The CW in the US, and BBC One in the UK and on BBC iPlayer.
