The Princess Diaries 3 is in development (again), with Reacher and Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji recently hired by Disney to work on a script.
This glittering update arrives via The Hollywood Reporter close to two decades on from The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which saw Anne Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis successfully convince parliament that she was capable of ruling Genovia as an unmarried woman.
Oscar winner Hathaway hasn't yet struck a deal to reprise her character, but she did reveal back in 2019 that she'd jump at the chance to return to the franchise.

"I wanna do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it," she said while appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
"We all really want it to happen, it's just we don't want to do it unless it's perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It's as important to us as it is to you, and we don't want to deliver anything unless it's ready. But we're working on it."
Mukerji's appointment suggests that an earlier script, which The Princess Diaries original author Meg Cabot alluded to five years ago, isn't being used.
"[It] could happen, as we say. I am not allowed to say. I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can't. I'm not allowed," she teased of a threequel at the time.

"But it's really more following the movie than the books, so if she — the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister… which I personally would've thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going."
Fingers crossed this one finally happens.
