Batwoman and The Kissing Booth 2 stars' new comedy gets first trailer

Coming in a matter of weeks.

The first trailer for Batwoman's Ruby Rose and The Kissing Booth 2 star Taylor Perez's new comedy 1UP has been released by Amazon Prime Video.

The film stars Alexa and Katie's Paris Berelc as V, a varsity esports gamer who's forced to quit her college's male-dominated gaming league due to sexism from her teammates – particularly from team leader Dustin (Perez).

The trailer sees V and her best friend Sloan (Hari Nef) enlist the help of their video game expert teacher, Parker (Rose), now that V's esports scholarship is on the line.

With Parker's assistance, the BFFs form a new women's gaming team called The 8-Bits in order to compete against and defeat V's former teammates.

Starring alongside Berelc, Rose and Perez are also Nicholas Coombe (The Wilds), DJ Mausner (Insecure), Madison Baines (Transplant), Lolita Milena, Kevin Farley (The Waterboy) and Stephen Joffe (Alias Grace).

The movie is the first from Lionsgate and BuzzFeed's new partnership.

BuzzFeed's Richard Alan Reid previously said of the movie: "1UP is a fresh, authentic comedy with important social commentary, featuring a diverse cast of hugely talented and often underrepresented voices.

"Through this joint effort, we're eager to harness the power of the internet to reach global millennial and Gen Z audiences and tap into one of the most passionate online fanbases."

The role of Parker went to Ruby Rose after The Umbrella Academy's Elliot Page stepped down from it earlier last year.

Speaking of how she landed the role following Elliot's departure, Rose told Digital Spy:

"Actually, the role came to me because I had told the guys that did The Doorman over and over again how much I wanted to do a comedy, and do some other roles that weren't just, you know, killing people and kicking butt and taking names."

She added: "I play a teacher, and it's really sweet. It's really cute. It's got so much to it. I read the script, and went, 'OK, I have to do this film. This is exactly what I want to do.'"

1UP releases on Prime Video on July 15, 2022.
