The Great British Bake Off co-host Matt Lucas announces exit from show

"It's been a delicious experience."

Matt Lucas has confirmed he will be leaving The Great British Bake Off.

The former Little Britain star shared the news on his Twitter on Tuesday (December 6) that he is "cheerfully passing the baguette" to a new co-host for Noel Fielding after three series.

"Farewell Bake Off," he wrote. "It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers, but it's become clear to me I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside my other projects."

He sent his "warmest thanks and gratitude" to Noel, Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith and the rest of the Bake Off team as he leaves the tent.

"I wish whoever takes over all the very best and I can't wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won," he added.

Bake Off shared a goodbye message to Matt on its social media: "We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need.

"We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in Covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It's been a pleasure – thanks Matt."

Matt joined Noel as the newest Bake Off co-host alongside Noel Fielding as a replacement for Sandi Toksvig in 2020. The trio were replacements for original Bake Off presenters, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, during its BBC years.

At the time of his hiring, Matt revealed he was approached after Noel had a dream about the pair hosting a Bake Off episode together. They got to live out that dream for three series and numerous specials.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix. Bake Off: An Extra Slice, hosted by Tom Allen and Jo Brand, airs on Fridays at 8pm on Channel 4.
