Great British Bake Off airs new exit twist after last week's absences

"Pan de Denise."

Bake Off spoilers follow.

The Great British Bake Off was back on Channel 4 tonight (October 4) for Mexican Week.

Following Rebs and Abdul's absence during last week's Bread Week where nobody was sent home, two bakers were sent packing in tonight's Bake Off in a shock double elimination - James and Rebs.

Kicking off with the Signature challenge, contestants had to create the first of their Mexican bakes: 12 identical pan dulce which included some cactus conchas, corn on the cob conchas and some coconut besos (kisses).

Kevin impressed judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood during the tasty bun Signature, which saw fan favourite Carole mistakenly call her pan de anis "pan de Denise".

Next up, it was a Mexican Technical challenge where bakers tackled tacos, the Mexican street food classic, which consisted of steak, refried beans, guacamole (that's "glockymolo" to Carole) and salsa.

Coming last in the Technical, Carole's tacos failed to impress Prue and Paul, while Maxy came in first place once more.

For the Showstopper, bakers were tasked with creating a multi-layered milk-soaked tres leches cake which included a Day of the Dead cake, a Mexican Tiramisu and Syabira's sweetcorn sponge.

Ultimately. it was James and Rebs' performances that didn't cut it and the pair were sent home.

"Honestly devastated, this means the world to me. Bake Off's been a fabulous experience, it's just I didn't want it to be cut this short," said a tearful Rebs after her elimination.

"I'm always sad to see any baker go but particularly James," said judge Prue Leith.

But it was Maxy who impressed the judges most, winning Star Baker for the second time.

"I think Maxy winning Star Baker for the second time is well deserved, she was the most consistent over the three challenges," Paul said of Maxy's win.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix. Bake Off: An Extra Slice, hosted by Tom Allen and Jo Brand, airs on Fridays at 8pm on Channel 4.
