Vin Diesel has compared the Fast & Furious movies to Lord of the Rings.

The star is currently gearing up for the tenth movie in the action franchise, Fast X, which will form the first chapter of a two-part finale.

Speaking to Variety about what has gotten harder about doing the movies since he started the franchise over two decades ago, Diesel admitted he has found it tough to make the "mythology" bigger, comparing it to JRR Tolkien's work on Middle-earth.

"You know what gets harder? The work off-screen. The thinking, the expanding… there's a reason why Tolkien stopped writing after a while," he said.

"Because it's so hard to continue mythologies. Nobody thinks about it in that context, but it's real. It's not the easiest thing in the world to…," he continued, before the interviewer suggested Fast & Furious is "the Lord of the Rings of action movies".

"The Lord of the Rings of action movies," Diesel agreed. "Well said, from your mouth to God's ears, it's so true."

In a British accent, the actor then quipped: "I should've stopped after The Hobbit!"

Of course, both the Fast & Furious and the Lord of the Rings movies kicked off their runs in 2001, the latter ending in 2003 with The Return of the King.

The trailer for Fast X is due to finally launch later today (February 10) after debuting exclusively at a fan event last night.

The next movie will see the return of Diesel as Dom Toretto, with a number of regulars back as well including Sung Kang's Han, Michelle Rodriguez's Letty, Tyrese Gibson's Roman, Ludacris's Tej, Jordana Brewster's Mia, Charlize Theron's Cipher, Dame Helen Mirren's Queenie and Nathalie Emmanuel's Ramsey.

Fast X is out in cinemas on May 19.
