Over its nine movies to date (excluding spin-off Hobbs & Shaw), the Fast & Furious series has been building an interconnected universe that can sometimes rival the MCU.
Characters have returned from the dead (hi, Han!), long-lost relatives have been discovered (hi, Jakob!) and former villains have come back to haunt Dom and his familia (hi, Cipher!), so it's no surprise that Fast X continues this tradition of retcons.
We've finally been treated to the four-minute(!) long trailer for Fast X and while there's not quite a surprise on par with Han's return in F9's first trailer, it did reveal a surprising detail when it comes to Jason Momoa's flamboyant villain Dante.
No, he's not another long-lost brother of Dom – Dante is to the son of Hernan Reyes.

As we see a flashback to Fast Five, Dante says in voiceover: "You built such a beautiful life, filled with love and family. I never got that chance. You stole that from me: my future, my family."
As Dante says "family", we see a close-up of Dante and Fast X has retconned the fifth movie's bridge battle to show Dante was actually in the car that Dom knocked into the sea with the vault.
You can see the comparison of both scenes below:
Dante is shown flying out of the car into the river where we see him open his eyes. It also looks like (somehow) he was in the police station when Dom and Brian stole the vault, glaring after them through the massive hole in the wall they left.
You'd be forgiven for not remembering Reyes as he was the main villain of Fast Five (aka Fast & Furious 5) which came out more than a decade ago in 2011.
It was the movie that shifted the series into the one fans know and love today, culminating in Dom and Brian driving a vault through the streets of Rio. We never expected then that it'd be viewed as one of the least unbelievable moments in the series.
But we digress.
Dom, Brian and Mia escape to Rio at the start of the movie after Dom is broken out of a prison transport bus by Brian and Mia. While there, they unwittingly get involved with Reyes who is a ruthless drug lord and, unhelpfully for them, has most of the police on his payroll.
After they cross him, the trio are framed for the murder of DEA agents bringing Luke Hobbs (more on him in a bit) into their lives too. As retaliation, Dom and co decide to steal from Reyes by forcing him to move his $100 million drug money into one location, where they promptly steal it (even though it is in a vault in a police station).
Reyes tries to stop them, but it only leads to Dom ramming the vault into Reyes's car. However, it's not Dom who kills Reyes – it's Hobbs, out of vengeance for Reyes slaughtering his entire team earlier in the movie.
What's interesting is that based on the Fast X trailer, Dante appears to be blaming Dom solely for his father's death. The trailer shows that Dante kidnaps Dom's son Brian at one point, one of his many threats to break Dom's familia.
Could it be that Dante has already hunted down Hobbs and taken his revenge? We know that Dwayne Johnson is very unlikely to reprise his role in either Fast X or the final movie, but it'd certainly be a bold call to kill Hobbs off-screen.
Dante isn't the only new Fast X character with ties to Fast & Furious history as it's reported that Brie Larson's Tess is the daughter of Mr Nobody and that Daniela Melchior's mystery character is the sister of Elena, the late mother of Dom's son.
Neither of these are confirmed in the first trailer, but we do at least know why Dante is out for revenge.
Fast X is released in cinemas on May 19.
